Restoring a Backup
Restoring a backup replaces the current company's data with the data from a previously created backup file. This is useful for undoing unintended changes, recovering from data loss, or copying data from one company into another.
Warning: A restore is permanent and cannot be undone. All current data in the company will be replaced. Make sure you have a backup of the current state before restoring.
What Gets Replaced
Everything included in the backup will overwrite the equivalent data in the target company:
| Gets Replaced | Not Affected |
|---|---|
| All contacts | Your user account and login details |
| All items and services | Subscription and billing status |
| All transactions (invoices, bills, expenses, etc.) | Other companies in your account |
| Chart of accounts | Document template customisation |
| Journal entries and vouchers | |
| Company details and settings | |
| Tax rates and defaults |
Step-by-Step: How to Restore
- Go to Settings
- Click Backup & Restore in the left menu
- Click Restore Backup
- Click Choose File and select your
.jsonbackup file - Read the warning carefully — restoration will overwrite all current data
- Type your company name to confirm you understand the action
- Click Restore
- Acusheet will process the file — this may take several seconds depending on the size of your data
- Once complete, you will be redirected to the dashboard with your restored data
Cross-Company Portability
You can restore a backup from Company A into Company B. This lets you:
- Duplicate a company's setup (chart of accounts, tax rates, defaults) into a new company
- Move your data to a fresh company if you want to start with a clean slate
- Test changes in a separate company before applying them to your live data
To restore into a different company, simply switch to the target company before performing the restore.
The backup does not need to have been created from the same company you are restoring into.
Troubleshooting
The restore failed — what should I do?
Check that the file is a valid Acusheet backup (.json format). If the file was created from a significantly older version of Acusheet, some fields may not be compatible. Contact support if the issue persists.
My restore completed but some data looks different
A restore replaces data exactly as it was at the time of the backup. Any changes made after the backup was created will not be present. This is expected behaviour.
Can I restore just part of the data (e.g. only contacts)?
No — restores are all-or-nothing. Partial restores are not currently supported.
How long does a restore take?
Most restores complete in under 30 seconds. Very large datasets (thousands of transactions) may take up to a few minutes.
